What is Menstrual Irregularity?
Menstrual irregularity refers to the condition where a woman’s menstrual cycle is irregular. Normally, a woman’s menstrual cycle lasts an average of 21-35 days, with bleeding occurring approximately 3-7 days each month. A menstrual cycle shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days, menstrual length less than 2 days, or more than 10 days is considered abnormal.
Menstrual irregularity is generally more common in adolescent girls and women approaching menopause. However, any woman of any age may experience menstrual irregularity. While in some cases, menstrual irregularity may only occur for a few months, for some women, it can last much longer.

Causes of Menstrual Irregularity
- Hormonal Changes: The menstrual cycle can be significantly influenced by changes in hormone levels, which may occur due to the use of birth control pills, hormonal disorders, or stress.
- Age: Changes in hormone levels become more common during puberty or approaching menopause, leading to menstrual irregularities.
- Excessive Weight or Underweight: Excessive or insufficient body fat can lead to hormonal imbalance, resulting in menstrual irregularities.
- Intense Exercise: Women engaging in intense sports activities may experience a significant reduction in body fat, leading to hormonal changes and, consequently, menstrual irregularities.
- Gynecological Diseases: Conditions such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, adenomyosis, and cancers of the uterus, cervix, and ovaries can cause menstrual irregularities.
- Infection: Infections affecting the inner layer of the uterus, called the endometrium, can lead to menstrual irregularities.
- Presence of Intrauterine Device (IUD): The presence of intrauterine devices (IUDs), as foreign objects, may cause menstrual irregularities until the body adapts.

Is There a Treatment for Menstrual Irregularity?
Menstrual irregularity is not just a standalone condition but generally emerges as a significant symptom of some underlying diseases. Therefore, in the treatment of menstrual irregularities, the primary focus is on eliminating or correcting the medical condition that could lead to this issue.
If it is determined that a woman’s menstrual irregularity is due to hormonal imbalance, hormone-regulating medications are prescribed for the treatment of menstrual irregularities. If irregularities are caused by other reasons, an appropriate treatment is applied accordingly to find a solution. You can learn more about these treatment methods from your doctor.
